Borussia Dortmund hosted the Spanish giants in style when Serhou Guirassy scored a hat-trick and became the record goalscorer for the German team in a single UCL Campaign. However, the hat-trick and winning the game for BVB wasn’t enough—they had to defeat the traveling team on aggregate. Despite losing the game and being completely outclassed by the hosts, Hansi Flick’s men walk into the semi-finals.

Borussia Dortmund looked to take their revenge on the Spanish giants the moment the referee whistled for the kick-off. From the beginning, Karim Adeyemi and Pascal Gros were making things hard for the Barcelona defenders. The big break came in the 10th minute of the game when Gros won a penalty for his side.

Ice Cold Serhou

Serhou Guirassy stood up to take the penalty for Dortmund. Keeping his calm and cool, he hit the sweetest Panenka right over Szczesny’s head, sitting him down to have a look at his illustrious strike. 

Luck not in Adeyemi’s favour

The German wonderkid Karim Adeyemi was having the time of his life taking on Barcelona’s defenders on the left flank. With a series of his shots taken at the opposition’s net, however, he was very unlucky to convert any single one of them in the first half.

 Soon after the play restarted in the second half, he was quick to take another shot at FCB’s goal, testing Szczesny’s reflexes near the near post. 

Guirassy on the Double

In the 48th minute of the game, Nico Svensson took one of the most precise free-kicks, one that reminded Germans of the sniper, Toni Kroos. He curled the ball in, inch-perfectly, for Bensebaini to head it over to the right side of the goal post, where Guirassy capitalized on the lead. The Yellow Wall was reborn with a passion to overturn the 2-goal deficit with this goal of the Guinean international. 

Bensebaini’s night of mixed emotions

Just 5 minutes after assisting Guirassy for the double, Bensebaini found himself at the worst possible position for a defender to be in—scoring an own goal. With a cross coming from Fermin Lopez from the right flank, which was initially planned to reach Robert Lewandowski, was dealt with by the Algerian, only for him to put it in his own net, rather than clearing Fermin’s delivery. 

This was definitely a game where the Barcelon attack looked clueless, not creating a single big chance over the course of 90 minutes. 

Guirassy’s triple touble

With the hopes of a semi-final spot going out of sight for the home team, the hosts wanted to attack with a more direct approach. Soon after Julien Duranville’s introduction to the side, problems were caused by the young starlet. 10 minutes later, he put in a peach of a cross that found Araujo, who failed to take a proper touch on it, helping Guirassy score his hat-trick on the perfect stage. 

With just 15 minutes left to play on the clock, Girassy, Svennson, and Gross all took a combined of three shots, but were unlucky not to convert their chances. 

The host won the game, but they couldn’t overturn the tie in their favor.

Borussia Dortmund put up a fight against one of the top contenders of this season’s UEFA Champions League in pursuit of a potential Treble, FC Barcelona. Their efforts fell short of a dramatic comeback when Bensebaini put the ball in his own net on a Fermin Lopez cross in the second half, taking a toll on the team’s mentality at that moment.
