You have probably seen the term “SOCKS5 proxy” while researching online privacy. It sounds technical, but the concept is straightforward. It routes your internet traffic through an intermediary server to hide your IP address.
However, not all proxies are created equal. And on that note, not all VPN providers offer them. This guide explains what SOCKS5 is, how it works, how to use it, and why FastestVPN has made the deliberate decision not to support it. It’s better you understand the security issues before using one.
SOCKS stands for Socket Secure. It is a networking protocol that relays traffic between your device and a destination server through a proxy. SOCKS5 is the latest version, and it improves on older versions in two key ways:
Think of it this way: your data does not travel directly to the website you are visiting. Instead, it goes to the proxy server first, and the proxy server forwards it on. The website sees the proxy’s IP address, not yours.
A SOCKS5 proxy works by intercepting your network packets and routing them through the proxy server.
When you connect to a website, your request goes to the proxy. It then establishes a connection to the destination on your behalf.
There is one critical point to note: SOCKS5 does not encrypt your traffic. It only hides your IP address.
Your data travels through the proxy in plaintext, which means anyone monitoring the network, can see what you are doing. For instance, your ISP, a hacker on public Wi-Fi, or the proxy operator.
This is the fundamental difference between a SOCKS5 proxy and a VPN. A VPN encrypts your traffic. A SOCKS5 proxy does not.
Here are the key differences to help you better understand the differences:
| Feature | VPN | Socks5 Proxy |
| Encryption | Yes | No |
| Hides DNS requests | Yes | Not by default |
| Hides IP address | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Full-device protection | Specific apps (torrenting, gaming). |
| Works at | Network layer with encryption | Lower network layer |
A SOCKS5 proxy is a routing tool. A VPN is a security tool. They solve different problems.
These tutorials are only if you’ve got SOCKS5 credentials from a provider. Here is how to configure them on different platforms:
Windows does not have a native SOCKS5 setting in its system proxy menu. This is a common source of broken setups.
Here’s what works on Windows:
The Wi-Fi proxy settings on both platforms are HTTP proxy fields, not SOCKS5 fields. Entering SOCKS5 credentials there will not work.
To use SOCKS5 on mobile, you need a dedicated app (like Potatso or Shadowrocket on iOS) that creates a local tunnel and routes traffic to your SOCKS5 endpoint.
This is where the picture gets less appealing. SOCKS5 proxies come with significant risks, which is also why FastestVPN doesn’t incorporate it:
This is one of the biggest issues; SOCKS5 does not encrypt your data. Your traffic travels in plaintext. Anyone with access to the network can see what you’re doing. This includes a public Wi-Fi operator, your ISP, or the proxy provider.
When you use a SOCKS5 proxy, you are routing all your traffic through a third-party server. That operator can log your activity, monitor your connections, and potentially sell or share that data. You have no guarantee of privacy.
Security researchers have identified serious flaws in SOCKS5 implementations. In 2026, a vulnerability (CVE-2026-9697) was discovered in the undici HTTP client for Node.js.
When configured with a SOCKS5 proxy, the requestTls option was silently ignored. This allowed Man-in-the-Middle attacks. This is where an attacker could intercept and modify HTTPS traffic that was supposed to be protected by certificate pinning.
Another vulnerability (CVE-2026-67339) in the Guzzle HTTP client allowed proxy authentication credentials to leak to origin servers when requests were routed through SOCKS proxies.
These are not theoretical risks; they’re all documented, critical flaws that can compromise your data.
As mentioned, a SOCKS5 proxy is not a security tool. It does not encrypt your traffic, it does not protect you on public Wi-Fi, and it does not hide your DNS requests by default. If you need real privacy, a SOCKS5 proxy alone is not enough.
No. FastestVPN does not support SOCKS5 proxies. This is a deliberate decision based on our commitment to security and simplicity.
We built FastestVPN around a different philosophy: encryption first. Our VPN encrypts all your traffic, hides your IP address, and protects your DNS requests. We do not offer a proxy mode that strips away encryption and leaves your data exposed.
Some users have requested proxy support for specific use cases like torrenting or bypassing port restrictions on public networks.
We understand that need. However, adding a SOCKS5 proxy would mean offering a feature that does not protect you and, in some cases, actively exposes you to risk.
Instead, we focus on making our VPN faster, more reliable, and more secure. If you need to bypass network restrictions, our VPN is designed to do that with full encryption.
No, it isn’t. A SOCKS5 proxy routes your traffic through an intermediary server but does not encrypt it. A VPN encrypts your traffic and routes it through a secure tunnel. They serve different purposes. This entirely depends on your definition of safe. SOCKS5 hides your IP address, but it does not encrypt your data. The proxy operator can see your traffic. Plus, the vulnerabilities in proxy implementations have been documented. If true online security is what you’re looking for, consider a VPN matched with antivirus solutions. Yes, but it comes with risks. SOCKS5 is commonly used for torrenting because it supports UDP and can hide your IP from peers. However, your traffic is not encrypted, and your proxy provider can see what you are downloading. A VPN with P2P support is a safer alternative. FastestVPN doesn’t offer it because they prioritize encryption and user safety. A SOCKS5 proxy does not encrypt your traffic. We would rather focus on making our VPN fast and secure than offer a feature that leaves you exposed. No, not if it’s through the native settings. iOS proxy settings are for HTTP proxies, not SOCKS5. You would need a third-party app that supports SOCKS5 tunneling. Is a SOCKS5 proxy the same as a VPN?
Is SOCKS5 safe?
Can I use a SOCKS5 proxy for torrenting?
Why doesn't FastestVPN offer SOCKS5?
Can I use SOCKS5 on my iPhone?
SOCKS5 proxies have their uses. They can help with specific tasks like torrenting or accessing geo-restricted content in certain apps. However, they are not a substitute for a VPN, and they come with real security trade-offs.
FastestVPN has made a clear choice: we do not offer SOCKS5. We believe your privacy is worth more than a convenient routing tool.
If you want real protection, encryption, IP masking, and DNS leak protection, our VPN delivers that.
