UEFA Champions League Tuesday Results (Feb 17)

Galatasaray 5 – 2 Juventus

The Rams Park hosted the first leg of this knockout play-off tie. Gabriel Sara scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute after he capitalised on a Juventus mistake from the throw-in of Cambiaso.

The visitors were eager to get one back as Teun Koopmeiners equalized in the very next minute. The Dutch starlet scored his second of the night just after the half-hour mark, giving the Old Lady a lead heading into half-time.

Play resumed, and Napoli’s loanee, Noa Lang, was quick to score against the Italian side in the 49th minute. Gala had equalized.

The third goal of the night came through ex-Spurs man Dabinson Sanchez as he headed the cross from Sara’s free-kick into Juve’s net.

Noa Lang scored his second of the night as another ex-Napoli ace, Victor Osimhen, assisted him for his brace in the 74th minute.

The game was put to bed when Sacha Boey scored to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Turkish Super Lig side.

BVB Dortmund 2 – 0 Atalanta BC

The Guinean international Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for the home side against Atalanta in the 3rd minute of the game. The second and the last goal of the night came in the 42nd minute from the home side again, this time it was Guirassy with an assist for Maximilian Beier.

The game ended 2 nil in favor of Borussia Dortmund.

AS Monaco 2 – 3 Paris St-Germain

What felt like putting an end to PSG’s formidable status, Monaco started well from the minute one.

Folarin Balogun scored in the very first minute for Monaco from an assist by Golovin, and then again in the 18th minute to give the home team a 2-goal lead against the UCL winners.

Over the next couple of minutes, Waes got a yellow card, Vitinha missed a penalty, and Desire Doue made way onto the pitch for Ousmane Dembele. The substitute scored just two minutes after making his way onto the pitch.

Achraf Hakimi levelled the game just a few minutes before the first half whistle blew.

Benfica 0 – 1 Real Madrid

The first half between both teams was compact and well-balanced, with Benfica and Real Madrid both having enough chances to open the scoring. Thibaut Courtois and Anatoly Trubin were both outstanding between the sticks.

The second half began with Vinicius Jr. scoring 5 minutes later, and then the drama unfolded. The Brazilian superstar was first booked for his celebration with the corner pole, and then he accused the Benfica starlet Prestianni of directing racist remarks against him.

The match was halted for 10 minutes, with every player headed towards the touchline, trying to resolve the matter.

Once the play resumed, it was a chain of cards shown by the match referee on multiple occasions to players of both clubs. The match ended with Jose Mourinho getting a red card and being suspended from the next leg when Benfica visits Santiago Bernabeu.

UEFA Champions League Wednesday Results (Feb 18)

Qarabag FK 1 – 6 Newcastle United

Newcastle absolutely thumped the Kazakh side at their home in the first leg of their knockout playoff tie. Anthony Gordon scored the first of his four goals in the third minute of the game. Malick Thiaw scored NUFC’s second just 5 minutes later.

A 32nd-minute penalty was converted from the spot by Gordon. He scored his hat-trick just one minute later. To top off the performance, the Englishman scored a poker of goals after converting yet another spot kick just before the half-time mark.

The second half saw Qarabag’s Elvin Cafarguliyev score the home side’s only goal of the night in the 54th minute. While substitute Jacob Murphy scored Newcastle’s 6th just four minutes after coming on in the 72nd minute.

Olympiacos 0 – 2 Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Czech striker Patrik Schick scored twice against the Greek side Olympiacos to take a healthy 2 goals lead to the BayArena back in Germany for the German side.

Bodo Glimt 3 – 1 Inter Milan

The fairytale run for the Norwegian side continues in the UEFA Champions League, after a commendable journey in the UEFA Europa League last season.

The Norwegian side opened the scoring at home against Inter, with Brunstad Fet’s opener in the 20th minute. Inter got one back 10 minutes later with a sublime strike from Pio Esposito, with a brief check from VAR to conclude that the goal stands.

Second half play resumed with Inter making a key tactical substitution, replacing Lautaro Martinez with Marcus Thuram. Just a minute later, Bodo took the lead with starman Jens Petter Hauge scoring for the home side.

Three minutes later, Kasper Hogh put the game to bed when he scored the third goal for Bodo. The game ended 3 – 1 to Bodo, with the next leg scheduled at the San Siro.

Club Brugge 3 – 3 Atletico Madrid

A game where people would have imagined Atleti to cruise over the Belgian side easily, after beating Spanish rivals FC Barcelona 4 goals to none just over a week ago in the Copa del Rey, Brugge surprisingly came as the better, more balanced side than the Spanish giants.

Atleti scored off a penalty from Alvarez in the 8th minute, doubling their lead with Lookman’s goal in the 45+4th minute.

In the second half, it was all Brugge. Onyedika got one back for the Belgian giants in the 51st minute, with Tresoldi scoring a banger within 10 minutes of the first. Brugge were back in the game!

Disaster struck when Brugge’s Ordonez scored an OG in the 79th minute. However, it was Tzolis who leveled the game again in the 89th minute, leaving everything to play for in the second leg in Madrid next week.

Better stats in terms of shots taken, shots on target, possession, ball possession, and fouls committed, Ivan Leko’s side fought hard to give a tough time to Simeone’s team when both clubs face off for the second leg at the Metropolitano.
