The Journey So Far

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain started their Champions League Campaign on September 15 at their home, Parc des Princes, defeating Atalanta 4-0 on matchday 1 of the campaign. They then defeated Barca 2-1 and Leverkusen 7-2, both teams away from home on matchdays 2 and 3.

PSG suffered their first defeat of the season on matchday 4 when they hosted Bayern, with the away side winning 2 to 1. French champions bounced back on matchday 5, beating Spurs 5-3 at home. The 6th match was the first time the Parisian side failed to score, holding Athletic Club to a 0-0 draw at home.

Once the football season resumed after the international break, two back-to-back results against Sporting (2-1 loss) and Newcastle (1-1 draw) secured their qualification for the knockout playoffs, rather than direct qualification to the round of 16.

Knock-out Playoffs

Paris faced their French counterpart Monaco in the knockout playoffs of the Champions League. They defeated them 3-2 in the first leg at the Stade Louis II, while a narrow 2-2 draw in the return leg was enough to secure their qualification in the round of 16.

Round of 16 and beyond

Paris took on Chelsea in the round of 16, setting the perfect stage for their revenge against the London side for their Club World Cup win nearly 8 months before the RO16 matchup. PSG crushed the team 5-2 at home and defeated Chelsea 3 -0 in the away leg. In the quarter-finals, PSG drew Liverpool as their opponent. Defeated them 2-0 in both home and away legs, knocking the English champions out of the competition.

Then came the semi-final. Paris, Bayern, an absolute goal-fest. The first leg between both giants ended 5-4 in favor of PSG at the Parc, as PSG made it to the final after a 1-1 draw in their favor.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s league phase campaign was one of the most influential campaigns in the history of the competition. They won all 8 of their league phase games, while keeping 5 clean sheets in the process.

Arsenal beat Athletic Club (0-2) on matchday 1, Olympiacos (2-0) on matchday 2, Atleti (4-0) on matchday 3, Slavia Praha (0-3) on matchday 4, Bayern Munich (3-1) on matchday 5, Club Brugge (0-3) on matchday 6, Inter (1-3) on matchday 7, and Kairat Almaty (3-2) on the last matchday.

Round of 16 and beyond

Arsenal faced Leverkusen away in the first leg of the round of 16, and the match ended as a 1-1 draw. The second leg took place a week later, and the Gunners took a 2-0 win over the German club, comfortably booking their spot for the quarters.

In the quarter-finals, Arsenal faced the Portuguese club, Sporting CP, winning the first leg 0-1 away from home and drawing the return leg 0-0 at home, meaning they were semi-finals bound.

Then came their biggest test, facing Simeone’s Atleti in the semi-finals. The first leg at the Metropolitano ended in a 1-1 draw between the two, with all to play for in the second leg at the Emirates. Arsenal won at their home, with a scoreline of 1-0, confirming their ticket to Budapest for the final of the UEFA Champions League 2025-26.

PSG vs Arsenal: Full Match Report (updated)

A full-house Puskas Arena welcomed the Arsenal and PSG squads to cheers, whistles and boos, as both teams took their halves.

Havertz scores in another UCL Final

The biggest moment of the game came in the 5th minute, when a Marquinhos clearance attempt turned into an Arsenal counterattack once the ball deflected off of Trossard’s shoulder, with Kai Havertz charging down the left flank and launching an absolute belter in the top right corner from his left foot, a shot too hard for Safonov to save or Pacho to make a tackle for.

Arsenal defends, PSG attacks

What followed next was a well-drilled Arsenal sitting back and defending their lead as their life depended on it. The London club sat back, while the Parisians did their best to break the deadlock and break in Arsenal’s defensive shape and setup, just for the French team to have leverage in the game as soon as possible.

But every time they tried to attack, Arsenal were completely dominant in defending their lead. Fabian Ruiz, Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Doué, Neves, and Vitinha all tried their best to break the lines and get a goal in their favor, but all failed. Fabian Ruiz and Nuno Mendes almost came close to scoring in the first half, but both times luck waved them goodbye.

Second Half shenanigans

The match resumed in Budapest, and Arsenal were quick to have two players carded, one after another, notably Mosquera and their starboy, Saka. Just after the hour mark, PSG got their moment in the game. Kvartskhelia charged into the Arsenal box, and Mosquera got him down, making the Georgian and his teammates appeal for a penalty in unison (and a red card for Mosquera). The ref awarded PSG a penalty, which Dembele came forward to take.

Dembele scored, and it’s GAME ON!

Ousmane converted his penalty, and it was game on for the Parisians. They finally got the breakthrough they were looking for, since the 5th minute of the game, when Kai Havertz had scored the opener. Next followed 4 substitutions from Arsenal, and 2 from PSG, before the 90-minute mark.

Nothing to separate at FT; everything to play for in the ET

Both sides headed into the extra time of the game, as the game was tied 1-1 at the full-time whistle. Arsenal used both of their available substitutions from the get-go, while PSG only made their 3rd change in the 95th minute.

Both Arsenal and PSG players looked tired by the 115th minute of the game. PSG made double substitutions in the second half of extra time, but there was still nothing to separate both sides. The game went to a penalty shootout to decide who gets the European Football crown.

PSG began the penalty shootout with Goncalo Ramos stepping up to take Paris’ first penalty. The Portuguese starman completely fazed Raya in goal, scoring off his kick.

From Arsenal, Swedish star Viktor Gyökeres stepped up for their first spot kick and converted.

Désiré Doué took PSG’s second penalty and scored. Eberechi Eze’s turn came, and the ex-Palace winger shot it wide, completely missing the target.

Then came Nuno Mendes for PSG, whose penalty was saved by Raya, giving Arsenal fans and players a sigh of relief. Declan Rice converted his kick, with the score standing at 2 each.

Both Achraf Hakimi and Gabriel Martinelli scored 4th penalty kick each for their clubs.

It all came down to the last straw— Lucas Beraldo, who replaced Vitinha in the extra time, came up to take the 5th penalty of the night. He scored! Now, the ball was in Arsenal’s box. Beraldo’s compatriot Gabriel stepped up to take Arsenal’s 5th kick of the game. He shot it completely over the top; PSG, back-to-back European Champions!

The END

Arsenal and PSG faced each other in the final of the UEFA Champions League 2025-26 in the Puskas Arena, Budapest, on May 30. The English club took the lead in the 5th minute of the game and looked in control of the majority of the game, with their specialized defensive setup; one mistake from their defender completely shifted the tide of the game. PSG went on to score the equalizing penalty, taking the game into extra time and then penalties, eventually winning the game and becoming the kings of the competition for the second year running.
