How to Change Your WiFi Password in 7 Steps: A Tutorial

A strong and unique WiFi password helps protect your WiFi network from unauthorized access. And, the steps for how to change your WiFi password aren’t as intimidating as they sound. Ideally, it’s best to change your WiFi password every 6-12 months to reduce the security risk over time.

How to Change Your WiFi Password on Phone

Whether you’ve an Andran oid or iPhone, the steps to change a WiFi password are quite similar because you can only do it online. Meaning, you only need a device that has access to the Internet and a browser. Once you’ve both, here’s how to change the WiFi password on the router.

• Go to your router’s configuration page via your preferred web browser. Ensure that this phone is connected to the same WiFi that you are changing the password for.
• Enter any of the router addresses from: 192.168.1.1, 10.0.1.1 (Apple devices), 192.168.2.1, 192.168.0.1, or 10.0.0.1 (Xfinity). Enter this in the browser’s address bar.
• If the addresses don’t work, use the Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Press Enter.
• Find your active connection from the list and find the Default Gateway address. This will be the router address.
• If none of the above-mentioned steps work, try to hold the Reset button at the back of your router for 20-30 seconds. Doing so will revert your WiFi router to the factory default settings. Look up the default address for your WiFi router model and enter it into your browser.
• If your WiFi router came with a separate configuration software and you had it installed, then use that instead of the web browser interface.
• Enter your router’s username and password.
• If you never changed the password since its configuration, your username might be “userAdmin” or “admin”.  The password might be “password” or “admin”.

Note: If you forgot the previous user name and credentials or got this router without resetting it, restore it to the original defaults. You can do this by pressing and holding the Reset button on the router for approximately 30 seconds. This will allow you to log in using the router’s default username and password.

• Navigate Wireless/Wireless Settings or Setup. Select it.
• Find Password/Paraphrase/Shared Key. Enter the new password in this section and confirm the action.
• In Security mode, it’s best to choose WPA2. Or, you can connect to WPA/WPA2/ However, it’s best not to use WEP because it’s easier to break.
• You can change your network’s name. Doing so will prevent unauthorized parties from breaking in.
• Tap on Apply or Save. Wait for some, time and all connected devices will be disconnected.
• Once done, connect your devices to the WiFi network.

How Do You Check Who Is Connected to Your Wi-Fi?

You can check who is connected to your WiFi via the router’s web interface, a netwoaanner or the Google WiFi app. Here are the 3 ways to check your WiFi connections:

Router Web Interface

• Go to your router’s web interface via your router’s IP address in the address bar.
• Log in by entering your username and password.
• Go to Connected Devices. Find a page that lists connected devices.
• You’ll see the connected devices’ locations or Attached Devices in the DHCP Clients Table.

Network Scanner App

• Install a network scanner app, such as Fing or any other.
• Open the app and run a scan.
• Check the list of connected devices to your WiFi.

Google Home/Google WiFi App

• If you’re using the Google Nest, check Connected Devices through the app.
• The app will display a list of devices connected to your network.
