Match Report: Brentford vs Tottenham

Spurs arrived at the Gtech with a rebuilt, expensively assembled squad and a new manager promising a fresh identity. Eighteen minutes in, none of that mattered. Brentford had already shown they meant business from the first whistle, and De Zerbi’s side never got out of first gear.

It took Keane Lewis-Potter just 12 minutes to open the scoring, finishing off a slick move down the left to give the Bees the lead. Brentford doubled it in the 33rd minute through Vitaly Janelt, who pounced after Tottenham keeper Antonin Kinsky could only parry a Brentford effort back into danger.

Spurs went in at half-time two goals down, having barely threatened at the other end; Sandro Tonali’s most notable contribution in the opening 45 was a thunderous volley high over the bar from a promising position.

De Zerbi turned to his chequebook at the break, sending on £85 million midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but the substitution didn’t slow Brentford down. Four minutes into the second half, Nathan Collins headed a corner back across goal, Mamadou Sangaré’s first-time effort was beaten away by Kinsky, and Michael Kayode was on hand to smash home the rebound and make it 3-0.

It might have been worse still. Rodrigo Bentancur brought down Kevin Schade in the box, but Igor Thiago saw his resulting penalty crash back off the post.

Mikey Moore, the 19-year-old academy winger, was arguably the only Spurs player to leave the pitch with any credit, forcing two saves out of Brentford keeper Caoimhín Kelleher. Everywhere else, it was one-way traffic. The result leaves Brentford top of the early Premier League table, while Tottenham’s rebuild is off to the nightmare start nobody at the club wanted.

Conclusion

Brentford’s 2026-27 Premier League campaign is off to the perfect start, and it came at the expense of a Tottenham side that spent big over the summer but looked completely unprepared for the physicality and intensity Keith Andrews’ team brought to the Gtech. Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt, and Michael Kayode did the damage on the scoresheet. For Roberto De Zerbi, the alarm bells are already ringing after just one game, and with Tottenham’s new-look squad still finding its feet, questions will be asked before they’ve even played their second fixture.
