Teams to watch out for in the League Phase of UCL 2025-26

  • Paris St. Germain

Fresh off winning the Champions League for the first time in their history for the 2024-25 season, PSG will be looking to terrorize their opponents in Europe for the second year straight. Luis Enrique is on a mission after missing out on the FIFA Club World Cup Gold back in July.

  • Liverpool FC

Liverpool were the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League 2024-25, after Luis Enrique’s team completely outclassed them at Anfield and went on to win the whole thing.

After a big summer from the English Champions in the transfer market, adding players like Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and record-breaking transfers including Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz from the Bundesliga plus the deadline day bomb signing from Newcastle United, Alexander Isak, Arne Slot is ready to make his mark in the European football with the 7th Champions League title for the Reds.

  • Real Madrid

The Reyes De Europa, the Undisputed Kings of Europe, you can never count them out. There is a reason they have won the competition 15 times in their history, almost twice as many as the second-most title-winning teams in the competition. After losing to Arteta’s Arsenal both home and away last season, this year’s team has undergone a massive overhaul, starting with their manager, as Xabi Alonso took over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer. Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono are some of the reinforcements made under Xabi in his first season with Los Blancos, to challenge for this season’s title.

  • Arsenal

Arteta’s Gunners have been a consistent team in the Premier League for a while now; however, they have always missed the chance to win the crown. Last season, Arsenal got very close to UCL success, until they met PSG in the semi-finals. This year, after a number of reinforcements in the required sectors, especially the signing of Victor Gyokeres, Arsenal are ready to challenge for the title this season.

  • Chelsea

You can not count the club out of this season’s UEFA Champions League, which just defeated the champions of Europe in the FIFA Club World Cup back in July. Chelsea Football Club, managed by Enzo Maresca and led by Reece James and Enzo Fernandes, is ready to wreak havoc in Europe after missing out on the competition last season, as the club competed in and won the UEFA Conference League.

  • Manchester City

After having their worst-ever season since Pep Guardiola took over the club, Man City’s ownership has continued to show its support for the Spaniard. The 2x treble-winning manager was handed all the necessary budget to reinforce his team in the summer transfer window. Additions like Tijani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, and Gigi Donnarumma have just been some of the star signings that are ready to take City back to the top!

  • FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona has been a treat to watch under Hansi Flick, with the high-intensity, high-scoring, and direct football they play. With the addition of Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia to the club, Barca is ready to challenge for what was once theirs.

  • Napoli

The Italian team has been a powerhouse since Conte took charge, a force to be reckoned with in Europe. With the necessary summer reinforcements and high-profiles like Kevin de Bruyne and Rasmus Hojlund, Conte’s men will prove to be very difficult for the opponents in this season’s Champions League.

  • Bayern München

The German champions have always turned up big in the UEFA Champions League, and this time won’t be any different either. The attacking philosophy under Vincent Kompany is hard to cope with for any sort of opposition. It could be the season the 7th UCL badge gets added to their sleeve.

In Preview: Hottest Fixtures of Matchday 2

Here are some of the most exciting matchups to look out for this matchday:

Kairat Almaty vs Real Madrid

This is Kairat’s first-ever UEFA Champions League appearance, and this is Real Madrid’s first-ever trip to Kazakhstan. Reyes de Europa face the debutants, which is a storyline the football world loves to see. Here’s how Kairat’s squad reacted when they learnt about the fixture with Real Madrid.

Chelsea vs Benfica

This fixture is a Special One, for very special reasons. Jose Mourinho, the man who gave Chelsea an identity in English top-flight football, returns to his beloved Stamford Bridge, this time as the head coach of Benfica, in his second spell at the club, replacing Bruno Lage just a few weeks ago, as he was sacked due to a poor run of performances.

Atlético de Madrid vs Frankfurt

After winning only two games out of 7 since the season began, Atleti finally showed their level best, defeating their city rivals, Real Madrid, over the weekend. Atleti handed Los Blancos their biggest defeat suffered at the hands of Rojiblancos in nearly 70 years, putting 5 past Real Madrid.

For Eintracht, they had a 5-star outing last time in the CL against Turkish side Galatasaray. They are also 4th in the Bundesliga.

Galatasaray vs Liverpool

Gala has won every game in the Turkish Super Lig so far this season. Their only loss has come in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt, where the Bundesliga team put 5 past the Turkish giants.

Liverpool had not lost a single game this season, until the weekend, when Oliver Galsner’s Crystal Palace scored a late winner against the Premier League table-toppers to remain the only undefeated team in Europe this season. This will be an exciting matchup for the star power in both clubs.

Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain

Unarguably, the biggest game of this matchday, and it would prove to be one of the biggest ones as the season unfolds. FC Barcelona were hit with some heartbreaking news over the course of last week, which confirmed Raphina and Joan Garcia will both be out for a couple of weeks, two of the best players of the club this season. On the other hand, PSG scooped up a handful of awards at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, with Ousmane and PSG both winning the award in their respective categories.

This will be a big game in terms of star power on display from both teams, and due to the tactical battle that will unfold between Hansi Flick and Lucho Enrique.

Other notable big games in the Champions League this week

  • Napoli vs Sporting CP
  • Villarreal vs Juventus
  • Monaco vs Manchester City
  • Borussia Dortmund vs Athletic Club
