Liverpool 1 – 2 Man City Match Report Feb 8: Haaland back to scoring ways as Liverpool lose at Anfield
By Johan Curtis No Comments 5 minutes
Liverpool hosted Man City at Anfield on Sunday, February 8, in an epic encounter. Pep Guardiola’s team wanted all three points away from home to bridge the gap between league leaders Arsenal. The match didn’t produce many entertaining moments in the first half, but the second half’s play was everything you would call complete entertainment. Liverpool opened the scoring at Anfield, with City claiming one back through their captain, and then with Haaland scoring a penalty. More drama unfolded in the added extra time when City thought they had scored a third through Rayan Cherki, only for it to be disallowed for a foul committed by Szoboszlai on Haaland in the build-up, who ended up getting a red card as a result.

Liverpool vs Man City Match Report
Not an extraordinary first half
The City and Liverpool fixture has been one of the most entertaining battles in the Premier League in recent times. This game, however, missed that flair in the opening 45 minutes of the game, with a few fruitless attacking opportunities coming from City’s side.
Szoboszlai opens the scoring
The Hungarian captain opened the scoring for Liverpool after he converted yet another free-kick from the spot with his knuckleball technique. The game looked like it was in control of the home side.
Bernardo claps back
City captain Bernardo Silva was quick to equalize for the visitors when he hit a perfect shot in the 84th minute. City were back in the game as of this instance.
Haaland at the double
8 minutes later, City won a penalty, and it was Erling Haaland to fulfil the duties. As calm as the Norwegian likes it, he thumped one in the bottom corner and finally scored at Anfield, the one stadium he had yet to score at since signing for Man City.
Second half shenanigans
The game was far from over when the second-half shenanigans began in the additional time. On a Liverpool set piece, Man City launched a counterattack with Haaland and Cherki leading the attack. The Frenchman launched a shot from the halfway line that saw the ball in the back of the net. Just moments later, Szoboszlai had tried to block the ball from entering the goal, but as he attempted to do so, he had pulled Haaland’s shirt in the build-up, with Haaland doing the same to the Hungarian. Craig Pawson, after a brief conversation with VAR, showed a red card to the Hungarian Captain and chalked off City off their third goal at Anfield. The game ended 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Conclusion
Man City defeated Liverpool at Anfield on February 8, with Haaland scoring the winning goal in front of the Kop, his first at Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai did his best to give Liverpool the early lead in the second half and make the most of his shift at the right-back position; however, he could only do so for a couple of minutes after giving his team the lead as Bernardo and Haaland scored in quick succession. He later got a red card on the night, which will see him miss the next game in the Premier League. Don’t miss the epic Premier League action while traveling abroad.
