Grand Theft Auto VI is finally close. After years of leaks, two delays, and a marketing campaign that’s been rolling since June, Rockstar has locked in a release date, shown real gameplay, and confirmed most of what fans have been arguing about since 2022. Here’s everything that’s actually confirmed, updated as of September 2026.

GTA 6 launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
That date has been through two changes already. Rockstar originally aimed for a 2025 window when Trailer 1 dropped in December 2023. In May 2025, alongside Trailer 2, the studio pushed the release to May 26, 2026. Then in November 2025, it moved again to the current November date, with Rockstar saying the extra months were needed to hit the level of polish the series is known for. Take-Two has reaffirmed the date multiple times since, most recently around the pre-order launch in June, and there’s been no indication of another slip.
Going by how the PlayStation Store handles regional midnight releases, players in New Zealand will likely be among the first in the world to boot up the game.
Not at launch. Rockstar has a well-worn pattern here – GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both hit consoles first and reached PC one to two years later. Nothing official has been announced for a PC version yet, but going by that history, expect it sometime in 2027 or possibly early 2028. No PS4, Xbox One, or Switch versions are planned; this is a current-gen-only release.
Pre-orders opened globally on June 25, 2026, alongside the reveal of the full cover art and an updated logo. Two editions are available:
Anyone who pre-orders or buys before November 20, 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack for free – a set of retro-styled items for Jason and Lucia pulling from the aesthetic of the original 1980s Vice City. Digital pre-orders also come with one free month of GTA+.
Pre-loading is set to begin on November 12, 2026, a week ahead of launch, so players with digital copies can have the install ready to go the moment it unlocks.
The game takes place in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida, built around a modernized Vice City (its version of Miami). It’s the first mainline return to Vice City since the 2002 original, and it’s a much bigger canvas this time.
Rockstar has confirmed six major regions across Leonida:
Fan estimates based on official screenshots and footage put the map at somewhere between 1.5x and 2.7x the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County, though Rockstar hasn’t given an official figure. Unauthorized map images also leaked online in August 2026 alongside some gameplay footage, which Rockstar later acknowledged without going into detail.
GTA 6 follows two protagonists – Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos – in a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style criminal partnership.
Lucia Caminos is the series’ first primary female protagonist in a mainline game. Her backstory involves a rough upbringing, time in Liberty City, and a prison stint in Leonida after a robbery meant to protect her family. She comes across in the trailers as sharp and resourceful rather than a sidekick – she’s central to the story from the start.
Jason Duval grew up around grifters, tried the Army to get his life on track, and ended up running drugs anyway. Meeting Lucia sets the story in motion. Rockstar’s August gameplay showcase confirmed that character switching works on two levels: when Jason and Lucia are together, you can swap between them instantly, driving as one while the other rides shotgun – but switching while they’re apart triggers a short transition, similar to how GTA 5 handled its three protagonists.
A handful of supporting characters have shown up across trailers and marketing, including Stefanie from the Leonida Department of Corrections, Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, and producer Dre’Quan Priest, along with a rotating cast of Florida-flavored side characters that Rockstar has leaned into for the game’s satire.
For a long time, gameplay knowledge relied on the 2022 leak. That changed on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar released a 26-minute “Extended Look” presentation through Netflix, the first officially sanctioned gameplay footage, running on a base PS5, and reportedly drawing record viewership for a game reveal. It’s the clearest picture yet of how the world, driving, and combat actually hold up, beyond the cinematic trailers.
Beyond the dual-protagonist switching, expect the usual next-gen upgrades: denser NPC crowds, dynamic weather that actually affects missions, improved water physics, and longer draw distances that let the city blend into the wilderness without loading breaks.
Yes. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 Online will launch alongside the single-player campaign, with its own progression and economy rather than being bolted on later the way GTA Online was for GTA 5. Full details on structure and content are still limited, but it’s expected to be one of the bigger pushes post-launch.
Worth remembering: a huge amount of what fans knew about GTA 6 before the trailers came from a September 2022 leak. A hacker going by “teapotuberhacker” posted around 90 files – roughly 50 minutes of early development footage – to GTAForums, later identified as Arion Kurtaj, a teenager from Oxfordshire linked to the Lapsus$ hacking group also behind breaches at Nvidia, Samsung, and Uber. The footage was rough, unfinished material, but it confirmed the Vice City setting, the female protagonist, and the dual-protagonist structure months before Rockstar was ready to talk about any of it – which is part of why the official reveal felt rushed when it came.

If you’re outside the US or a region where pre-orders, the Extended Look stream, or day-one digital purchases roll out on a delay, a VPN can help you connect through a server where content is already live rather than waiting out the regional gap. It’s also worth having a stable, throttle-free connection on launch day itself; GTA 5’s file size ran well over 100GB, and GTA 6 is expected to be larger, so a long download is coming either way. FastestVPN works for both, picking a different regional server when needed and taking ISP throttling out of the equation during the download.
This page will keep getting updated as Rockstar shares more before launch.
