KuCoin US Restrictions: How It All Started<\/h2>\n

Founded in 2017, KuCoin gained quick popularity and, following that, it attracted an extensive US user base. However, KuCoin didn\u2019t comply with the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) as a money transmitting business, and that was just the start of a series of events that happened later.<\/p>\n

By 2023, KuCoin didn\u2019t require any customer verification, and it allegedly concealed money transfer activities. In March 2024, the US Department of Justice charged KuCoin and both of its founders for operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.<\/p>\n

In late January 2025, KuCoin’s operating company, Peken Global Limited, based in Seychelles, admitted guilt to running an unregistered money transfer service as part of a settlement with the US DOJ. This agreement led KuCoin to leave the US market for at least 2 years and pay approximately\u00a0 $300 million in penalties. This included almost $113 million in fines and $184.5 million in forfeited funds.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the exchange’s co-founders had to resign from their management positions and each give up $2.7 million under a deferred prosecution agreement. KuCoin was obligated to shut down all US user accounts by January 23, 2025, and block access from US internet addresses.<\/p>\n

Following this deadline, US users needing to withdraw remaining funds were told to contact customer support and pay a one-time fee.<\/p>\n
